In memoriam - Shawn Neary

It is with great sadness that we learnt the passing of Shawn Neary, on August 24th in Corner Brook, Newfoundland.

He was a member of the Master Team Canada who won the silver medal at the Masters National Championships in Banff, last June and had won gold in Tampa Bay in 2014.

Shawn was a great athlete in many sports. During his athletic career, he competed and won tournaments at the provincial, national and international levels in ice hockey, ball hockey, baseball, fast pitch softball, soccer and darts.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and teammates.

In memoriam - John Forrest

The CBHA would like to pay tribute to Mr. John Forrest, our first CBHA president (1977-79), who passed away earlier this summer. After regrouping with two other league owners in Ontario, he formed the first provincial ball hockey association in the country. Three years later, in 1977, he was already founding the Canadian Ball Hockey Association with the help of Al Tomalty and Ken White. In 1979, he was honored with the Special Achievement Award from the Province of Ontario for his contribution to fitness and amateur sport. He continued giving back to his community during all his life working as an educator for 33 years, and then becoming the principal at David H. Church Public School and later at Mnjikaning First Nation’s school, finishing his career as their Director of Education. Thanks to his hard work and perseverance, the CBHA was born, and we can still see his legacy today with thousands of kids playing ball hockey and growing through organized leagues across the country. Our heart reaches out to his family and friends in these difficult moments. Please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss.

Laval Legacy settles for Silver in Kelowna

The Laval Legacy came short in their 1-0 loss to the Kamloops Black Jacks on Sunday evening. After storming through the round robin stage with a perfect 4-0 record and defeating the New Found land Shop wins 1-0 in their semi final match up, only one thing was left to accomplish, and that was to take it all. Unfortunately, the fire power was limited as nobody was able to score at least once. Costa Stavriadis was brilliant throughout the entire tournament and was just as stellar in the final conceding one only tally. Frustrated to get their offence going, the Laval Legacy had to settle for silver at the C Nationals. The troops expected nothing less than a gold medal prior to the event, but shouldn’t keep their heads down after getting this close. Plenty of time and effort went into making this possible.Hockeyballe.com would like to thank some of the leaders and the rest of the line up for re presenting the Quebec Ball hockey Association. George Panagiotopoulos, Payam Assadi and Tasso Bozinakis are just to name a few.

Men’s Masters Team Canada Staff Announcement

The Canadian Ball Hockey Association is pleased to announce the staff for Men’s Masters Team Canada for the 2016 ISBHF World Masters Championships in Banff.

Matt Halverson, Delta (BC), TherapistAndrew Stagg, Corner Brook (NFLD), TherapistWilliam Marr, Dartmouth (NS), Equipment managerNick Sbarra, Montreal (QC), Assistant coachTerry Richards, Cobourg (ON), Assistant coachMark Guergis, Barrie (ON), Assistant coach Matt Halverson has already proven himself when working with Masters Team Canada. This will be his 4th experience as a dedicated therapist for this team. This championship is going to be his 7th international event in 7 years. He also worked as a therapist in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. Andrew Stagg will complete the therapist team. Since 2011, Andrew works as a team massage therapist for the St. John’s Icecaps, the farm team of the Montreal Canadians (formerly associated with the Winnipeg Jets). He has also shown his great skills in two World Ball Hockey Championships, in 2013 and 2015. William Marr is another great new asset to our team. As an equipment manager, he worked in 2015 with the Women’s Team Canada in the World Championship in Zug, Switzerland. In the past 20 years, he devoted himself to several hockey teams as a medical trainer and equipment manager. For a second time, Nick Sbarra will also be part of the team as an assistant coach. Recently, he was a staff member for the CBHA junior performance camp in Ontario in 2015. But mostly, he worked with the coaching team when winning the Gold in Tampa in 2014. Without a doubt, he will bring his passion for the game and his intensity to our team. Terry Richards will also bring his experience as an assistant coach for our team. Being GM, coach and player for 20 years, Terry has an impressive ball hockey resume. He coached the All-Stars Rep Hockey in Ontario for 6 years. He is also an Ontario ball hockey Hall of Famer. The other addition to the coaching staff is Mark Guergis. In the past two years, Mark has participated in international events as a player : the 2014 World Masters in Tampa and the 2015 World Championship in Zug with Armenia. In Banff, he will bring his knowledge of the game and his attention to details as an assistant coach. Congratulations to all of these talented members of the team for their nomination. I am thrilled to have such a strong staff working for our team and I can’t wait to work with all of you, bringing our team to excellence. François Chalut, Châteauguay (QC)General Manager/Head coach

Red Lite Win 11th Canadian National Title

Red Lite have famously won the competition eleven times since the beginning of the millennial. After claiming seven straight titles from 2001-2007, Red Lite jump started their dynasty in 2012 winning four more consecutive National championships. It’s no doubt to be widely considered the single greatest achievement in ball hockey. What makes this even more impressive was that they roared through the round robin stages with a perfect 5-0 record before collecting three straight playoff wins. One of their greatest challenges came in the quarter finals where they faced an in house rival, the Montreal Royal Flush as a late tally snapped a 3-3 tie sending them through to the semi finals. Similar to that game, Red Lite needed another 4-3 victory, this time versus the BC Falcons. Left with only one task, the well oiled machine wrapped up what was a perfect week with a perfect 4-0 result over Team Manitoba. Over the years, Red Lite have found a way to make the proper modifications in order to keep a competitive pedigree, something that is difficult to do when considering eleven titles have been captured in only fourteen years. While some of the veteran leadership have yet to slow down, names such as Paul Roy, Mathieu Lebrun, Jonathan Daoust, Martin Frechette just to name a few, the younger click led by Yannick Labonte has the potential for this dynasty to continue on for years to come.

Congratulations to the 2015 National Champions Red Lite. Just below are the names of who made it happen:

She was a member of the coaching staff on the team that won gold in Pilsen, Czech Republic in 2009 and Silver in Bratislava, Slovakia in 2011. Her playing career spanned 25 years and was highlighted by being selected Captain of the women’s team that won gold at the first official Women’s World Championship in Ratingen, Germany as well as the Vancouver Sharks team that represented Canada at the Women’s World Cup in Pittsburg, USA in 2005. With her many years of coaching experience and playing experience, particularly on the international floor surface, Lori brings a combined package that begins with leadership, knowledge of the game and a passion to win.

Tom Walsh is excited to return for a second consecutive term as assistant coach of the Women’s National Team. His resume includes a gold medal from the 2013 World Championship which was held in his home province of NL. His goal is to support the WTC coaching staff and players in preparing to defend their World Championship title.Tom has a diverse sporting background and has competed and coached in a variety of sports at the intercollegiate and senior levels. He has been coaching Triple “A” ice hockey teams and senior ball hockey teams for the past 8 years. His NL Home Hardware team are three-time provincial champs and have participated in the Eastern Canadian Championships for the past five years and have earned several medals and a couple of championship titles. Tom has always supported sport and ball hockey at the grass roots level. He just recently chaired the ‘Sports and Venues’ committee for the NL 2014 Winter Games and is presently the director of women’s ball hockey for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Tom is quite passionate about fitness. He is excited and humbled to be invited as assistant coach of WTC and is hoping that his fitness experiences will once again help our Canadian players in preparing for the upcoming World Championship in Zug, Switzerland.

“I am thrilled to have coaches the caliber of Lori and Tom returning to the team” says Diana Brown, Head Coach Women’s Team Canada. “The knowledge and experience that these two bring to the table will be integral to the success of the women’s team that will be defending the gold at Zug in 2015.”

CBHA Community Team`s Hit The World Stage

The ISBHF is holding its 3rd Master World championships in September. A Couple interesting things are occurring.

First off this will be the largest Masters ever. Secondly this will be the first time our neighbour ASHI hosts a event in Tampa Bay with its partner Matt Geary and his complex. And finally the women will hit the masters stage for the first time.

National teams will be coming from Slovakia, Austria, Bermuda, USA and Greece. And of course the CBHA will have national teams for both the men and women representing all of our CBHA family.

But the CBHA will be sending 4 community teams to represent the CBHA. These teams come from Newfoundland, and the Toronto area, and Niagara Horseshoe area.

The Women`s and two men`s teams come from the OBHF. They are:

Women - Withrow Park - OBHFMen - Toronto Wolfpak - OBHFMen - Ballhockey.com - OBHFMen - Newfoundland Screech - NLBHA

You can cheer these teams on along with our two National teams beginning September 17, on the web. Please check http://www.isbhf.com to get linked in.

Finally this will set the table for the players to prepare for the first Master`s Nationals in Ottawa in August 2015. Winner of that will represent us in 2016 at the next ISBHF Masters.

In Memoriam - Robert Mentis

The Canadian Ball Hockey Association would like to express its deepest sorrow over the passing of Robert Mentis in August.

Robert was an important part of the famous Brampton Midnight Express, which he’s been a member of since its inception in 1996, year where they won their first National Championship in Montréal, QC. Over the years, he went on to win a total of 7 National Championships with Midnight Express, the powerhouse of ball hockey in the 90’s.

In 2001, Robert was selected to play on Team Canada, and with him our national team won gold at the ISBHF World Championships in Toronto, ON.

We would like to take this opportunity to offer our deepest condolences to his family & close friends and teammates.

He was known to be a gentleman both on and off the floor and will be greatly missed.

Early into the second period Niagara tied it up. Vanier Mooseheads crowned women’s 2014 in Saskatoon

The 2014 Women's National Championships hosted in Saskatoon, SK was one for the history books in the CBHA.Not only was this the first time for the event to be held in the Province of Saskatchewan but also the first time we have had a Women's Team participate from the priarie Province. For the 5th time in the last seven years we had two teams from Ontario at the top of the Women's Division. Vanier Mooseheads and Toronto Shamrocks finished the round robin respectively first and second garnring a bye into the semi finals while the BC Hawks, Alberta Rockies, NL United, Saskatchewan Wheaties and Manitoba Rage followed from third to eighth place. The first quarter final match saw the Alberta Rockies defeat NL United 4-2 to advance to play Toronto Shamrocks in the semi final. The second quarter final had the newcomers Saskatchewan Wheaties pull off a last minute goal to defeat the veteran BC Hawks 1-0 and move on to the semi finals to face the number one Vanier Mooseheads. In semi final action both Ontario teams stepped up once again versus their opponents and the Toronto Shamrocks defeated the Alberta Rockies 3-1 while Vanier Mooseheads easily handled the Saskatchewan Wheaties 5-0.Championship Saturday started off with our Bronze Medal matchup between Alberta Rockies and Saskatchewan Wheaties. Shelby Davie scored the lone goal for Saskatchewan Wheaties to take a 1-0 lead to he locker room at the intermission. Danny Stone from Alberta tied the game with 4:45 remaining in the second period to send the game to overtime. Nothing was solved after the first ovetime period as the teams traded chances. Both goalatenders up for the challenges that faced them. With 5:48 remaining in the second ovetime Rhianna Kurio took advantage on the power play to send the Alberta Rockies bench into a frenzy with the heroic goal as the Alberta Rockies captured the Women's Bronze Medal. The Championship game was once again an all Ontario affair with Vanier Mooseheads taking on the Toronto Shamrocks. The tournaments leading scorer Jamie Lee Ratray rippled the twine with 2:00 remaining in the first period to give Vanier a 1-0 lead after one period. It was only fitting that in the second period the Shamrocks phenom scorer Jamie Allen tied the game 1-1. The score remained that way to the end of regulation. With both teams trading chances early in overtime nothing was solved and it appeared we could be in for a lengthy match. It was Jessica O'Grady who scored the game winner with 3:32 left in the first OT to give Vanier the 2014 title of CBHA Women's National Champions.MedalsVanier Mooseheads - Gold MedalToronto Shamrocks - Silver MedalAlberta Rockies - Bronze MedalAwardsTop Scorer - Jamie Lee Ratray (Vanier Mooseheads)Most Valuable Forward - Julie Allen (Toronto Shamrocks)Most Valuable Defense - Lesley MacArthur (Vanier Mooseheads)Most Valuable Goalie - Whitney Showler (Toronto Shamrocks)Tournament MVP - Jamie Lee Ratray (Vanier Mooseheads)All-Star TeamGoalie - Jenelle Stam (BC Hawks)Defense - Kristen Cooze (NL United)Defense - Tamara Pickford (Saskatchewan Wheaties)Forward - Danny Stone (Alberta Rockies)Forward - Jessie McCann (NL United)Forward - Fannie Desforges (Vanier Mooseheads)

2014 National Champions : Red Lite wins there 10th title in Saskatoon

Adding to their illustrious history, Red Lite easily took care of the Nfld Black Horse with a 10-1 victory on Saturday afternoon. Since the beginning of the millennium, Quebec ball hockey has dominated at the National level by capturing 11 titles.    Congratulations to all the players and the leadership of Paul Roy, Mathieu Lebrun and Yannick Labonte just to name a few.Samuel BeauchampNelson Vargas-DiasMathieu LebrunSteve TaddeoSimon GhilarducciNick GuertinYannick LabonteSteve ProulxCarl GhilarducciYannick JompheKevin KuczmarskiPaul RoyMathieu DuguayMatteo StoicoDomenic MorencyMartin FrechetteJonathan DaoustJermie ParadisStephane RossiJean Luc Frentette (coach)

As any truly historic champion in sports, the 2014 Mtl Red Lite club will be remembered for its success. Its one thing to get to your main objective through hard work and adversity but the Mtl Red Lite made things look a little easier compared to most competitions. After cruising through four round robin games for a perfect 4-0 record, the legendary squad allowed all but one tally by their final game versus the Saskatoon Buffalo. With scoring power not being an issue, the Mtl Red Lite used there 21 goals for and one goal against round robin numbers to carry into the more important part of the tournament. The Red Lite continued their good play in the first round of the playoffs routing the Saskatoon Buffalo with an easy 6-0 victory. There next opponent featured the Niagara Rebels, and despite taking the match as they expected, this contest was far from being a walk in the park. Although it was expected to get more difficult moving forward, the Mtl Red Lite did find a way to edge their Ontario rival in a semi final match up by the score of 4-3. Leaving only one task to complete a perfect journey, the 10 time National Champions got it done with an exclamation point. The NFLD Black Horse also had a good run making it to the finals, but were clearly no match when it was said and done. From start to finish, the Mtl Red Lite dominated their maritime counter part posting up an impressive ten goals while conceding only one. Nelson-Vargas Dias gave his club the start they needed riffling three goals for a 5-0 lead and Samuel Beauchamp made the necessary saves allowing only one tally when the score was 7-0.After so many great achievements and dominance from the year 2000, when you’re the Mtl Red Lite and the bar is set as high as it is, anything less than a title, is itself a failure.Congratulations to the Mtl Red Lite. The Quebec Ball Hockey Association continues to be a dominant force at the National level. In the last 15 years, Quebec teams have captured 11 out of 15 National titles since the year 2000.Here is a summary of their game results in Saskatoon Saskatchewan 2014.Round Robin:(6) Mtl Red Lite vs Vancouver Falcons(0)(6) Mtl Red Lite vs Calgary Phantoms (0)(6) Mtl Red Lite vs Vancouver HC       (0)(3) Mtl Red Lite  vs Saskatoon Buffalo (1)Play-off Round:(6)  Mtl Red Lite vs Saskatoon Buffalo (0)(4)  Mtl Red Lite vs Niagara Rebels      (3)(10) Mtl Red Lite vs Nfld Black Horse (1)For more details: www.cbha.com

National team as Head Coach.  New Team Canada GM, Gwen Ranquist-Lemieux has selected 2014 Minted CBHA Hall of Fame player Diana Brown, of the Ontario Ball Hockey Federation (OBHF) as Head Coach to defend Gold in Zug, Switzerland, 2015.To say Diana Brown has done it all as a player and coach of this great game is an understatement to say the least. At the national level Diana has competed in 15 national championships as a player from 1991 to 2013, winning 8 medals of which 5 were gold.  On the world stage she has competed in World Championships for Canada in Pittsburg, USA (2005), Martin, Slovakia (2006) and Ratingen, Germany (2007), winning two silvers and one gold.  In addition to being a great player, Diana is a true leader in this sport and has been acknowledged for this by winning the Sara Butterworth Award in 2008 and being inducted into the CBHA Hall of Fame in 2013.  In 2014 she co-founded the Greater Toronto Women’s Ball Hockey League that already is attracting top talent from the Toronto area.  Through her leadership this league will grow for years to come.Although most know Diana as a great player she also has a long list of coaching accomplishments including as the player/coach of the Toronto Shamrocks who won the 2012 CBHA National Championships and 2013 OBHF Provincials and the Assistant Coach of Women’s Team Italy at the 2013 ISBHF World Championships.“I am very excited to welcome Diana as the new Head Coach of Women’s Team Canada.  I think that 2015 will be a tougher year and all eyes are aimed at Canada as we head to Zug.  Diana knows what it takes to win and the kind of team that can adjust to anything the World will throw at us. I am looking very forward to working with her to form the team and get ready for Switzerland,” says Women’s Team Canada GM, Gwen Ranquist-Lemieux.The 2015 ISBHF World Championships promises to be a challenging one for Canada to defend Gold.  The European nations will be waiting as will a new power growing at the USA through ASHI.  Coach Brown will have to make sure she has players who will rise to the challenge of these ever improving programs in the beautiful City of Zug.  CBHA President Shelley Callaghan says, “I have had the pleasure to know Diana as a player, a coach and a leader over many years.  She is a true mentor who not only knows what it takes to win but understands the pride of playing for Canada.  Diana wants Women’s Team Canada players to become Ambassadors for Canada, to perform and be respectful on the world stage but also to bring this passion to their individual leagues to help grow the sport from the grassroots up. The CBHA is so proud to have this great leader at the helm of Women’s Team Canada heading to Zug.”The players of Canada have a new Coach to aspire to impress to earn that National team jersey in 2015. Congratulations to new Team Canada Coach Diana Brown.

Canada Looks to Lebrun to return to Gold

Men’s Team Canada GM Jeff Dzikowicz sent out a call for applicants to see who was up for the challenge of leading the National Men's Team for the 2015 World Championships.  Against a very strong field of coaching applicants from all over the CBHA, the newly minted GM conducted extensive interviews and made his first big move by signing one of the most legendary players of the Canadian Ball Hockey Association (CBHA) history to lead his ship of warriors into battle against the ever improving World landscape of the ISBHF Men's A Division.  The new National Men’s Team Coach will be Mathieu Lebrun from the Quebec Ball Hockey Association.  This slick, highly skilled passer and effective ball hockey player has now been selected to lead the National Team.  Lebrun is a 3 Time World Champion, and 9 Time National Champion.  Besides the gifted offensive ball hockey mind he possesses, Mathieu is someone who has won at the highest level as a player.  His record speaks for itself.  It is one of Golden excellence.  He has winning at our sport imprinted in his mind and is ready to share this with the CBHA players who earn the National team sweater.  “I was very impressed with Mathieu’s knowledge of the game and his thirst for Gold in Zug.  Players that are fortunate enough to be part of Team Canada will feel this passion, drive and determination and will elevate their play as a result.  Canada needs to be great to win Gold in Zug and Mathieu knows what it takes to make that a reality”, says GM Jeff Dzikowicz.Lebrun will no doubt dip into the recipe of skill, speed, discipline and ball control that led his National teams, and legendary Red Lite teams, which played in one of Canada's strongest league, Hockeyballe.com, to dominate the ball hockey World since 2000. But don't doubt Lebrun's attention to detail and knowledge of the game on the defensive side as he also made an impressive run in his later years as a player from a offensive juggernaut winger, to a key National Champion defenseman. CBHA President Shelley Callaghan says, “The CBHA is very excited to welcome Mathieu Lebrun as the Head Coach of Men’s Team Canada.  During his interview Mathieu talked about the importance of being a team on and off the slab and how being part of Team Canada is an experience a player will hold close to their heart forever.  There is no doubt that Mathieu has the knowledge on the floor to take on and win against teams in Zug but he also understands what it means to wear the maple leaf proudly and this passion is something he is very excited to share with the great players from coast to coast that will earn these coveted spots.” Players from Coast to Coast will have to catch the eye of National Coach Lebrun as he builds his team that will be going into one of the most impressive fields ever assembled at the A Pool in Zug, Switzerland in 2015.  His track record is one of winning and the players should note that this Coach will be looking for players who are hungry to represent Canada, and win each shift on the floor.

The CBHA announces the new GM for Team Canada Masters

The CBHA is proud to announce the General Manager who will lead the Canadian National Men's team at the 2014 ISBHF Master's World championships in Tampa Bay, Florida, USA on September 18-21.  The tournament which is being hosted by the USA promises to be the largest Master's Men's following the first two which were held in Bratislava, Slovakia and Pilsen, Czech Republic. The GM chosen by the CBHA HP Director and CBHA Men's Chair and Board counsel is François Chalut of our Quebec Association.  Chalut started playing ballhockey in High School in 1990, and his journey from his beloved neighborhood Brossard, led him to be part of a team called Dynamique Info Système that evolved finally into the Black Knights.  If that was not enough in 1995 he joined a team called the Steelers who, in 1999  was a part of the beginning of the Red Lite.  That is part of ball hockey royalty.  Since then he has been the spearhead of the Eastern Regional powerhouse Capitals for years bringing this classy franchise to our CBHA events for years always having clean, skilled and well organized teams.  Travelling the Eastern province's and visiting our provincial associations and garnering two gold medals in his teams travels.  Team Canada hopes this excellence will rub off to our Masters Nationals team.  Just like he has for his many teams that he has been part of on their creation to Gold.CBHA Men's chair Jason Baiani, states, "Frank's expierence in the game and attention to detail will be integral in the success of the Masters program and our National team representing the CBHA and all of our provinces".  Chalut will take over a program that will be filled with CBHA Hall of Fame players, ex-National Team players and top CBHA players of the past.  The program is a family who has represented Canada with pride,  clean play thus fulfilling its ambassadorial mission in its first two Worlds.Chalut hopes to lead the Masters team to its first Gold medal to go with the Silver and Bronze it has earned under the past excellent leadership of Mike Schweighardt of BC.  Chalut says" It is such an honour to be named GM of Masters Team Canada. I have been organizing teams for more then 20 years ans I have always been commited ans passionate about it. THis time, it's th ebiggest challenge that I will face. Being a part of an International competition and beeing the General Manager of our country is something that didn't seem possible not long ago. All the experience acquired in the past will permit me to select the men and players that will make Team Canada a success story. Our group will be skilled, intense, fast, disciplined, commited, passionate and will form a family that will be remembered. When you wear the leaf on your uniform, this goal is not to be great or excellent, it is to bring back home the Gold!"The team will be named in the next few months, and the CBHA its members, and CBHA board are proud to name a person of François Chalut calibre and excellence to our National program.

Quebec men’s teams win gold, silver and bronze medals while Women’s capture gold and silver to go perfect at this years 2013 National ball hockey championships.

It wasn’t long ago that the Eastern Regionals were held in Oakville Ontario and after dominating the B, C, D and Women’s Regionals the success carried over for the elite teams as Red Lite once again captured the gold medal for a ninth time defeating the Black Knights 5-2 and Dek Hockey Drummond claimed themselves as women’s champs in a tight battle versus Dek Hockey De La Capitale. Combining for a total of 13 men’s and 8 women’s teams from all across the country this event demonstrated once again how intense, thrilling and exciting the beautiful game of ball hockey can really be. Red Lite has set the standard of how this game should be played and after winning it for a ninth time they have reached a feat that may never be matched for decades to come. Led by Paul.Roy, Mathieu Lebrun and Sandro Morello the Red Lite have done an impressive job adjusting their roster in the recent past by adding some big names such as Yannick.Labonte ,Nelson.Vargas-Dias and Domenic.Morency just to name a few. While they weren’t the only Quebec team to capture a medal the Mtl Black Knights also walked away with silver and the Scorpions captured bronze after going to a shootout against the Niagara Rebels. As for the Women’s finals both clubs re presented the province best they can only to have Dek Hockey Drummond finish on top in a close contest versus Dek Hockey De La Capitale. After a long intense week of high quality hockey this tournament will be looked back by many as a memorable experience. CBHA Minor and Adult High Performance Directors Named

The Canadian Ball Hockey Association (CBHA) is pleased to announce Gary Slavin from Maple Ridge, BC as the new CBHA Minors HP Director and Terry Ryan from Mount Pearl, NL as the CBHA Adult HP Director. Both individuals bring incredible expertise to these positions through their lifelong dedication to the sport as players, volunteers and leaders. The CBHA is very excited at the passion both gentlemen have for advancing their respective programs and their combined vision to build bridges between the minor and adult programs, creating a coordinated high performance program from coast to coast.

They say that true leadership shines through early in life and for Gary Slavin that was certainly the case. Taking on the organization of a street hockey league after school as a teen, this early ball hockey experience was just the start of a long and successful career in ball hockey as a player, coach, father (of two young players) and league executive. Over the last 7 years Gary has coached one or two teams in ‘house’ league in addition to coaching competitively in two Provincials, seven Western Challenge Cups, six Junior Nationals and one Junior World Championship. During this period Gary also served on the executives of the Ridge Meadows Minor Ball Hockey and West Coast Minor Ball Hockey Associations providing the extra time and leadership needed to keep the game strong and coordinated. In 2012 Gary was appointed General Manager of U16 & U18 Junior Team Canada (being part of 3 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze) and sat on the CBHA Junior Team Canada High Performance Committee. The level of organization and communication provided by Gary to parents, coaches, players and staff was appreciated and recognized by everyone. Having worked with minors at so many levels, Gary has taken and sees the value of programs like the NCCP Coaching Certification, Speak Out (Respect in Sport) and basic First Aid certification, as essential elements needed by those working with children and youth. Gary puts the kids first and is passionate about giving opportunities while creating safe and supportive environments for growth. The CBHA is very excited that Gary will be taking his incredible vision to this new role of Minors HP Director and looks forward to working with him to not only build a strong Junior Team Canada Program but help advance youth ball hockey development Canada-wide.

Excelling, building and developing ball hockey from the grassroots to the world stage is something that is very close to Terry Ryan’s heart. You just need to sit and speak with him for 5 minutes to hear the excitement in his voice when he talks about this great game and where he hopes it can develop in the years to come. Terry Ryan has made a huge impression across Canada and internationally in the ball hockey world. Terry has represented Canada in 2003, 2007, 2009 and 2011 as a member of Men’s Team Canada at the ISBHF World Championships and will be representing Canada once again at the upcoming 2013 Worlds in St John's. Although Terry may be best known for his performances as an athlete, he also gives much back as a volunteer and parent, receiving many community service awards for his dedication. Terry has incredible media and broadcasting experience (TV, radio and print) and he is about to publish a book “Tales of a First Round Nothing” that chronicles his experience in the NHL. As part of his volunteer experience Terry helped develop the Breakaway Youth Program for Inuit youth in Natuashish (formerly Davis Inlet) a small community near Labrador to help address the staggering substance abuse problems so prevalent in this community. This innovative program used hockey as a reward for studying- ‘education through motivation’ - with boys traveled to play in tournaments giving them opportunities beyond their communities. Organizing the program, related trips and requests for funding to keep the program going are all great skills Terry has acquired through this program that he brings to the new HP Adult position. Terry feels very fortunate for all the opportunities he has had and wants to help develop both high performance and grassroots development across Canada within the Adult program. The CBHA is very excited to welcome Terry as the new Adult HP Director and looks forward to building on the passion and unbelievable connections that he brings to this position.

Norm Spitzer Appointed as JTC Director of Scouting

On behalf of the CBHA High Performance Program, it is with great pleasure to announce the appointment of Norm Spitzer as the Junior Team Canada Director of Scouting. With a tremendous track record the Junior Team Canada program has had over the past six years, its not far to look that Norm has been an instrumental part of the success (4 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze). Norm from Edmonton, Alberta has been scouting JTC players since 2007, and has the eye and the knowledge to put the talent needed on the floor. In his first JTC scouting year, Norm was appointed as the U16 Head Coach for the first ever Canada squad. Norm along with 22 players that he assembled brought back from Zvolen, Slovakia the first World U16 Gold awarded by the ISBHF. Norm in his 16th year with minor ball hockey continues to be a huge part of the Minor Ball Hockey Edmonton Association scene. Along with his son Tyrel, he has put many high calibre teams not only on the floor within the hometown league, but as well as coaching/managing 10 teams at the Western Challenge Cup Championships and 6 at Junior Nationals. Norm in 2012 was part of the U16 & U18 JTC squads as he was the Assistant General Manager overseas in Pisek, Czech Republic. With the experience of two Junior World events and 7 of the last 9 Junior Nationals, Norm knows what type of player it takes to compete on the world stage. One of Norm's many tasks will be to seek out scouts across the country to have coast to coast input to the JTC program. Norm also has over 30+ years of experience in a leadership level with Ice Hockey including stints as President of the Mill Wood Hockey Association and the South Side Athletic Club where he has seen numerous players go on to the WHL, AJHL, NCAA and NHL. I personally would like to thank and welcome Norm as I look forward to continuing to work with him and building a strong national program for our youths of Canada. RED LITE CAPTURES 8th CBHA MEN’S NATIONAL TITLE

EDMONTON , ALBERTA- It came as no surprise to see both these clubs battle it out for the ultimate prize after dominating the round robin stages. While NFLD Black Horse were trying to claim a second national championship in only two years, the Montreal Red Lite wanted to end their five year drought  with a win on Saturday afternoon. As always an important start to any game is vital. Sean Legris did just that for the  Red Lite with a goal just under two minutes in at 18:09.Ironically Mike Stinziani of Black Horse earlier had the first chance of the game as he flew by defenseman Carl Ghilarducci ,only to have him lose the ball as he was cutting to the net .Nicolas Guertin later added to that lead at the 3:34 minute mark of the opening period to put his club up 2-0 with one period remaining.  It may have come as a tall order at this point for the trailing team but one period was still plenty of time for Black Horse to get back into the game. Unfortunately for them Jonathan Daoust was able to take advantage with a power play goal to widen the lead to 3-0. Black Horse did eventually solve  netminder Samuel Beauchamp who had been  perfect throughout the entire game on a power play goal by Jeremy Bishop. Once again Jonathan Daoust responded shortly after, which really crushed any hopes for a Black Horse comeback. With time winding down Chris Sparkes did reduce the margin in half for the Black Horse before Nelson Vargas-Dias capped it off for the Red Lite on a feed by Jonathan Daoust who had a remarkable performance with four points that included two goals and 2 assists. Note:This was the 35 anniversary of the Men’s National Championship .Ironically it was in 1995 when Quebec first participated in a National Championship of which was held in Edmonton 17 years ago and the Montreal Storm captured the gold medal. Since joining the CBHA, Quebec has won 10 Gold Medals (8-Red Lite,1-Montreal Storm,1-Black Knights)4 Silver Medals (4-Black Knights), and 3 Bronze Medals (3-Black Knights) for a total of 17 medals. Congratulations to Red Lite 2012 National Champions

Quebec Captures Gold in Eastern Regional B,C & Women
Quebec Captures Gold in Eastern Regional B , C & Women WOMENS EASTERN REGIONAL CHAMPIONS       Les Coyotes de la Lanaudiere.A sweet fake along with a sweet touch led to a sweet smile for Sophie Lachapelle and les Coyotes de la Lanaudiere as she finally solved goaltender Nathalie Plourde of the Vanier Wild with a brilliant move. After playing to a scoreless two periods the Vanier Wild were awarded a great opportunity to end the match in overtime with a four minute power play but it was les Coyotes de la Lanaudiere instead who capitalised. Despite having to go into overtime, Les Coyotes showed great consistency all tournament long with an impressive 4-0 record in the preliminary round before winning it versus a tough opponent. The bronze medal game featured the St.John Thundercats vs the Vanier Sonics and just like the gold medal game this match was also decided with one goal.Colleen.McQuaid was the one who came up big with an early marker putting her team up 1-0 which held up as the final score. As much as that goal was important, the St.John Thundercats did an excellent job the rest of the way shutting out the Vanier Sonics in large part due to their net-minder Laura Campbell who was excellent stopping everything in her direction.Gold   medal    Coyotes de la LanaudiereSilver  medal   Vanier WildBronze medal  St.John Thundercats All in all, logic prevailed in the end as both teams deserved to win. With so many players giving a brilliant effort, five of them got recognised in the following categories:Top scorer          : Marie-Eve Provost       Coyotes de la LanaudiereTop forward        : Kate Whitters             St.John ThundercatsTop defenseman : Tia Marley                 Vanier WildTop goalie          : Natasha Plourde         Vanier WildMVP                   : Caroline Berube         Coyotes de la LanaudiereB EASTERN REGIONAL CHAMPIONS    Montreal United. It was all or nothing for the B regional champions. Prior to the tournament the Mtl United expected nothing less than to win it all. They showed great conviction early on cruising through the round robin stages with an impressive + 12 goals differential in only four games. While cruising through the semi finals vs the St.John Most Wanted in what was a one sided affair the Mtl United knew that they had a strong challenge ahead of them. The Capitals have been around for the longest of time and with a countless amount of championships in their ball hockey careers this was a perfect match for a great final. What sometimes separates a team from the other is how they dominate certain aspects of the game. The Mtl United showed why they were a top tier opponent by getting excellent goaltending from Christian.Lantin who was the buzz of the tournament, dangerous offence with so many weapons and the ability to defend while killing penalties. That’s exactly what they did against a dangerous power play team in the Capitals who failed to capitalise with so many opportunities.Gold medal   Montreal UnitedSilver medal  Montreal CapitalsBronze medal Saint John Most WantedBronze medal  Halifax Toothy MooseWith five awards given in as many categories both these clubs shared all of them.Top scorer             : Steven Cacciotti   Mtl UnitedTop forward           : Mathieu Ferron     Mtl CapitalsTop defenseman    : Carl Ghilarducci    Mtl CapitalsTop goalie             : Christian.Lantin    Mtl UnitedMVP                      : Eric.Faille             Mtl UnitedC EASTERN REGIONAL CHAMPIONS     Montreal Aces D’Hochelaga. With so much depth and high energy the Aces D’Hochelaga proved that they were the best team in the C regionals .After playing five preliminary round games without a loss they had their biggest challenge yet vs a rival opponent in the semi-final. The Kryptonite also had something to prove and with the game winding down Kevin Kuczmarski was clutch as he finally scored the first goal of the game with less than four minutes remaining. That put the Aces D’Hochelaga up 1-0 which held up as final result. The final however had a different story line as the possessed bunch wasted no time with four goals in the first half of the opening period to take total control of the match. Once again Kevin Kuczmarski played an important factor with a pair of goals and two assists. With so many players pulling their weight, Alexandre Lavoie also had a solid match with three helpers while goaltender Jonathan Richer was a rock all tournament long allowing only two goals in the elimination rounds.Gold medal    Montreal Aces D’HochelagaSilver medal   Montreal Rated RBronze medal Montreal KryptoniteBronze medal Carol Lake Metalworks These awards were given to the following players who had a great tournament.Top scorer                : Kevin Kuczmarski      Aces D’HochelagaTop forward               : Andrew Dewland       Carol Lake MetalworksTop defenseman       : Nick Tzaferis             Montreal Rated RTop goalie                : Jonathan Richer        Aces D’HochelagaMVP                         : Francis Pare             Aces D’Hochelaga

No need to yell ‘Car!’ — ball hockey’s the real deal

I loved playing street hockey as a kid, but there were two annoyances that couldn’t be avoided.

If you missed the net on a hard shot it was long walk to get the ball, which was only worse if it went under a car or in a neighbour’s shrubbery. Then there were those motorists who frequently halted the action.

If only the Manitoba Minor Ball Hockey League was around when I was a kid.

The Manitoba Ball Hockey Association was formed in 1978 and adults have enjoyed the game ever since, but it was only in 2010 that youth leagues began. Joining a trend that has swept the nation, youth registrations in Winnipeg have doubled each season and show no sign of letting up.

The sport is cheap, anyone who can play street hockey can participate, it’s great exercise and games are never cancelled due to poor weather since they’re held in arenas that would otherwise be empty during the spring and early summer months.

Makes you wonder why we weren’t doing this decades ago in Winnipeg.

“It’s probably been the most underrated game in Canada for the past 20 years,” said Jeff Dzikowicz, the MBHA’s technical league director, who also plays. “(The growth) is really exciting because we’ve been involved in this for so long.”

There are 49 youth teams for players ages four to 16. In three seasons, youth registration has doubled each year with about 800 players this season.

“Youth registrations are exploding across Canada,” said MBHA’s executive league director, Kelly Huff. “We’re small potatoes compared to Ontario, B.C. and Quebec. We really started to take notice when we’d go to these national championships and we’d be saying ‘Look at all these 18- and 19-year-old kids playing. Where do they get these guys?’

“Then you find out they’d been developing them the last 10 years playing kids ball hockey. So we thought we have to get a youth program. Our biggest stumbling block was getting arenas.”

The MBHA was in panic mode a couple of weeks before the season started in April because it didn’t have enough venues, due to the sudden rise in youth registrations. Fearing about 200 players would have to be refunded their fees, the MBHA desperately requested the City of Winnipeg open another arena to go with Billy Mosienko. The City agreed to open Terry Sawchuk and the season was saved.

Huff and Dzikowicz expect to ask the City for more rinks next season, knowing registrations could double for a fourth year. Otherwise they could be turning kids away and that would be a shame.

“We get a lot of aboriginal and inner-city kids playing because of the cost of it, and we partner up with other organizations so that they can offset the cost. It’s just a win-win situation,” Huff said, adding many of the referees and timekeepers hired are students.

“Kids love it. They feel like they’re playing organized street hockey — and it’s inexpensive. You take that skating element out of it and it balances everything out. The kids that aren’t great skaters, but can handle a ball are just as good now as the kid who can fly down the ice. That’s the attraction to the sport — you don’t have to play ice hockey to play ball hockey.”

And nobody ever has to yell “Caaarrrrrr!”

FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT BALL HOCKEY:

The MBHA and MMBHL have more than 2,500 active members combined playing in various leagues throughout the year. The Canadian Ball Hockey Association has 52,000 participants, including more than 20,000 youth players.; Games are played under CBHA rules. There’s no body contact.; The only equipment required is a stick, helmet and cage, hockey gloves, runners and soccer shin guards.; Youth registrations for the past three seasons increased in Winnipeg from 240 to 402 then 756 this year, including about 40 girls. The biggest rise has been in the under-11 (13 teams) and under-13 divisions (11 teams). Registrations are expected to rise and possibly double again next year.; Individual youth registration fees range from $99 for under-7 players to $165 for the remainder. Youth season starts in late April and ends in late June with most games on week nights.; MBHA uses five arenas — Varsity View, Billy Mosienko, Terry Sawchuk, Glenwood and St. Norbert.; MBHA is sending four Winnipeg players to the under-18 World Ball Hockey Championship in June at the Czech Republic. They are Remi Laurencelle, Ryan Hutton, Kallan Kastes and Dylan Pascoe.; Manitoba will have three teams (U19, U17 and U15) at the Canadian Championships in Vernon, B.C. in July.;  Source: http://m.winnipegsun.com/2012/05/18/no-need-to-yell-car--ball-hockeys-the-real-deal Author: Doug Lunney Picture: BRIAN DONOGH/WINNIPEG SUN/QMI AGENCY
