Dekhockey de la Capitale wins women's provincial title

The Quebec Ball Hockey Association was hosting the 3rd edition of its Women’s Provincial Championship, last February 2-3 at Laval Centre Sport Expo.

Dekhockey de la Capitale won the qualifier, Dek Drummond came in second for spots at the Canadian Ball Hockey Association National Championships which will be held in Montreal in August, while the Warriors and Pure Laine settled for spots at Eastern Regional Championships, in Oakville from July 25-28.

Round Robin

Eight teams participated in the Provincial Championship, in what was a marathon of matches. All eight clubs were divided into 2 divisions and played three games each on the Saturday to determine who would advance in Sunday’s elimination rounds. Two teams captured the spot light as both Dekhockey de la Capitale and Dek Drummond won their respective groups in a dominating fashion with 3-0 records. That was enough to get a direct spot into the semi finals where they waited for their opponents.

Quarter Finals

After what was an intense quarter final battle between Les Coyotes de Lanaudière and Les Pure Laine, it was Anne-Julie Boucher’s second period goal that proved to be the game winner advancing Les Pure Laine to the next round.

The other match up saw the Warriors dictate the pace as a short handed marker from Kristine Daoust and a power play goal by Brittany Diabo’s second of the day was plenty for a 3-0 shutout win that also included a perfect performance from their net minder Sophie Boyer.

Semi Finals

This left four teams and two semi final matches where the round robin group winners prevailed. For the first and only time during the week end, Dekhockey de la Capitale conceded a goal that came off the blade of Amanda Lalande of the Pure Laine but managed to squeeze a tight 2-1 victory anyway with efforts by Geneviève Turgeon and Karine Demeule.

As for the other semi final match up, Dek Drummond needed two late goals by Mariève Provost and Julie Casavecchia to claim a 3-1 victory versus the Warriors.

 Bronze Final

As for the bronze medal game, the Pure Laine riffled a total of five tallies thanks to Marie-Hélène Desrosiers’ hat trick in a 5-3 victory versus the Warriors.

Gold Final

Finally, Dekhockey de la Capitale and Dek Drummond squared off in a much anticipated game. Both sides played perfect defence along with a solid goaltending. Caroline Ouellet, member of ice hockey Team Canada, ended the game by scoring the lone overtime goal for Dekhockey de la Capitale. Caroline Ouellet not only scored that deciding marker but was able to lead all players in points with two goals and eight assists in the round robin stages. Apart from her brilliant performance, Dekhockey de la Capitale can look back and feel great about how well they defended all weekend long by allowing only one goal and limiting their opponents to a minimal amount of shots on goal. Julie Fleury-Roy and Audrey Brouard were definitely a factor between the pipes recording four shutouts in five games.

Congratulations to all four clubs for representing Quebec at this summer’s Nationals in Montréal and Eastern Regionals in Oakville.
