CBHA Minor and Adult High Performance Directors Named

The Canadian Ball Hockey Association (CBHA) is pleased to announce Gary Slavin from Maple Ridge, BC as the new CBHA Minors HP Director and Terry Ryan from Mount Pearl, NL as the CBHA Adult HP Director. Both individuals bring incredible expertise to these positions through their lifelong dedication to the sport as players, volunteers and leaders. The CBHA is very excited at the passion both gentlemen have for advancing their respective programs and their combined vision to build bridges between the minor and adult programs, creating a coordinated high performance program from coast to coast.

Gary Slavin, directeur du programme senior

They say that true leadership shines through early in life and for Gary Slavin that was certainly the case. Taking on the organization of a street hockey league after school as a teen, this early ball hockey experience was just the start of a long and successful career in ball hockey as a player, coach, father (of two young players) and league executive. Over the last 7 years Gary has coached one or two teams in ‘house’ league in addition to coaching competitively in two Provincials, seven Western Challenge Cups, six Junior Nationals and one Junior World Championship. During this period Gary also served on the executives of the Ridge Meadows Minor Ball Hockey and West Coast Minor Ball Hockey Associations providing the extra time and leadership needed to keep the game strong and coordinated. In 2012 Gary was appointed General Manager of U16 & U18 Junior Team Canada (being part of 3 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze) and sat on the CBHA Junior Team Canada High Performance Committee. The level of organization and communication provided by Gary to parents, coaches, players and staff was appreciated and recognized by everyone. Having worked with minors at so many levels, Gary has taken and sees the value of programs like the NCCP Coaching Certification, Speak Out (Respect in Sport) and basic First Aid certification, as essential elements needed by those working with children and youth. Gary puts the kids first and is passionate about giving opportunities while creating safe and supportive environments for growth. The CBHA is very excited that Gary will be taking his incredible vision to this new role of Minors HP Director and looks forward to working with him to not only build a strong Junior Team Canada Program but help advance youth ball hockey development Canada-wide.

Terry Ryan, directeur du programme senior

Excelling, building and developing ball hockey from the grassroots to the world stage is something that is very close to Terry Ryan’s heart. You just need to sit and speak with him for 5 minutes to hear the excitement in his voice when he talks about this great game and where he hopes it can develop in the years to come. Terry Ryan has made a huge impression across Canada and internationally in the ball hockey world. Terry has represented Canada in 2003, 2007, 2009 and 2011 as a member of Men’s Team Canada at the ISBHF World Championships and will be representing Canada once again at the upcoming 2013 Worlds in St John's. Although Terry may be best known for his performances as an athlete, he also gives much back as a volunteer and parent, receiving many community service awards for his dedication. Terry has incredible media and broadcasting experience (TV, radio and print) and he is about to publish a book “Tales of a First Round Nothing” that chronicles his experience in the NHL. As part of his volunteer experience Terry helped develop the Breakaway Youth Program for Inuit youth in Natuashish (formerly Davis Inlet) a small community near Labrador to help address the staggering substance abuse problems so prevalent in this community. This innovative program used hockey as a reward for studying- ‘education through motivation’ - with boys traveled to play in tournaments giving them opportunities beyond their communities. Organizing the program, related trips and requests for funding to keep the program going are all great skills Terry has acquired through this program that he brings to the new HP Adult position. Terry feels very fortunate for all the opportunities he has had and wants to help develop both high performance and grassroots development across Canada within the Adult program. The CBHA is very excited to welcome Terry as the new Adult HP Director and looks forward to building on the passion and unbelievable connections that he brings to this position.
