3 Quebecers announced on Men's Masters Team Canada going to Bermuda for Worlds

It's an honour for the CBHA to announce the Men's Masters Team Canada's 23 man roster for the World Championship in Hamilton, Bermuda...The past experiences at the Worlds in Tampa Bay in 2014, in Banff in 2016 and at the Nationals in Ottawa in 2015 and in Saint John, New Brunswick in 2017 guided us to select our roster. Every team that competed this past August in Saint John will be represented in Bermuda. The great competition at nationals permitted us to form Masters Team Canada. Selecting the roster is always very difficult because there are so many 40+ fantastic players in the country. We selected a team that will be talented and strong at every position. Forwards, defensemen and the goaltenders will give everything they got to compete for the coveted gold medal.General Manager Francois Chalut " I would like to congratulate all the players that were considered to make this team but especially these twenty-three outstanding athletes on their selection on Masters Team Canada 2018."We lost something in Banff that belonged to us since 2014 in Tampa Bay and the quest to regain it in Bermuda has already started. The tournament will take place September 26-30, 2018.

Team Slovakia Wins Gold Medal at WC 5vs5 in Pardubice,Cz Republic--

Team Slovakia Wins Gold Medal at WC 5vs5 in Pardubice,Cz Republic-- Three-peat: Slovaks win wild, back-and-forth final.Canada wins silver

Patrik Svitana’s power-play goal with 1:55 left in regulation time broke a 4-4 tie, as the Slovaks won a gold-medal game in which they blew a three-goal lead, then had to come from behind themselves. Michal Hrivnak of Slovakia and Danick Martel of Canada each had two goals and one assist in the game, which Slovakia won 6-4 to “three-peat” as Men’s Ball Hockey World Champions.

Svitana’s goal was the first in a tension-filled third period, but the way the game started, it didn’t seem like the third period would be meaningful at all.

Slovakia struck twice before the game was a minute old, and made it 3-0 by the 7:22 mark. Jaroslav Martiniuk got things started just 19 seconds in, charging through the middle and surprising Tim Barlow with a low shot to the blocker side. Then they went right back to the attack and the Canadians couldn’t clear the zone after Lukas Madera fired a shot off the goalpost, with Hrivnak eventually sliding the puck into the net with Barlow down and out. The third goal was on a slapper by Boris Oravec on the power play, and it looked like the game would become a blowout, with the many Slovaks in attendance going crazy.

Just 34 seconds after Oravec’s goal, Remi Laurencelle got the Canadians on the board, beating Petrik five-hole from the left-wing side. Then they went to the power play shortly afterward and it took them just 14 seconds to strike, with Martel firing a blast over tournament MVP Stanislav Petrik’s shoulder.

Barlow and Petrik, who both posted shutouts in their teams’ semi-final wins, had now combined for five goals against in less than nine minutes.

The game settled down for a time after the wild start, but a pair of Slovak penalties late in the second period opened the door for the Canadians to strike twice and take their first lead of the game. On a 5-on-3, Martel’s second of the game tied it, a one-timer set up perfectly by Victor Azevedo. Then 51 seconds later they scored up one man after some nice tic-tac-toe passing finished off by Marcus Power, which thrilled the few Canadian fans in attendance and left the Slovak majority in stunned silence.

They would have something to cheer about before the period was finished, though. With 1:10 left in the middle frame, some pretty passing led to Milan Rampacek firing a ball into the open side, with Barlow having no chance.

Slovakia went hard for the win in the third period, getting several great chances, but after a shaky start, Barlow was now playing great. However, back on their heels, the Canadians took three penalties in a row trying to contain the Slovak push. They had a two-man advantage for a time, and while still up one man, the ball was worked to Svitana at the point, who’s one-time blast went through everybody, and sent the arena into bedlam.

After an empty-net goal from Hrivnak, the Slovak fans, whose emotions had been toyed with all night long, could finally let loose and start celebrating. After the final horn, they serenaded their now three-time ball hockey champions with the chant: “Zlaty hattrick.”

Reactions

Ian Moores (head coach of Canada): I think we had a great tournament. I’ve got a lot of respect for my players, the coaching staff and the Canadian Ball Hockey Association. We represented the country proudly and well. It’s disappointing to come fall short here today, we were tied coming into the third period, it could have gone either way. Overall I think we had a good tournament but going home without the trophy certainly sucks. I think the host committee did an amazing job here. The host city was great, the Czech Republic overall is a great country. They treated us with hospitality.

Jozef Ďuriš (headcoach Slovakia): We came into final with that, we want win it. We had great beginning, we caught Canada in first minutes off-guard, after them, we took the lead 3:0. But whole match was before us. That was confirmed, Canada turned around toi 4:3. But with enourmous will, enthusiasm and patience we turned the game in the end and gain the third title in the row.

ISBHF AGM in Sheffield UK

ISBHF AGM in Sheffield UKI should also take the time to thank here the contributions of the tremendous Board members who are leaving us but has left important contributions and a stable framework for us to continue into the future.  Christoph Curchod of Switzerland, Vit Rezac of the Czech Republic, Alister Cree of UK and John Kontitsis of Greece.  On behalf of all we thank them for contributions they have made on our sport.  The meeting itself was held in Sheffield UK.  What can we say other than the venue that ball hockey UK selected other that to say it is World Class.  Our players, parents, and the ISBHF family who will be descending on Sheffield will see a amazing venue.  A rink and facility that will provide the background to some amazing ball hockey to be played for the 18 National teams arriving in Sheffield to strive for Gold.  But more so, the venue with its great staff and facilities will provide a framework for memories and friendships to be built.  It will keep all the participants close to the rink.  Where is just across the street is the British Sport Institute whose facilities and track and state of the art gym provide British Olympic athletes a place to train.  Or the recreational facilities that Ice Sheffield has to offer like recreational skating events, and or the high altitude recreational complex linked to this facility there will be much to do.  In addition the facility provides wonderful food as we found out at our ISBHF meetings that we held on the complex that the players and fans will have to enjoy as the event goes on.  Believe it or not there is a major hockey store right across the street which will also be of service to all players and staff.  Yes a hockey store in England!!.  In all we were thrilled with this venue and are quite excited to go back to meet these wonderful people and have you all lucky enough to go to Sheffield meet them in July.Regarding this vibrant city of sport Sheffield really proved to be amazing city to walk through.  A bustling city with a real vibe to it.  I think this will provide an amazing backdrop to all whether it is going for a sightseeing walk through the city, which has a large mall and very interesting sites to visit, or for the adults to nestle into a pub that has been active as is since the 1700's.   This is the backdrop that UK Ball hockey has provided to us from which memories of a lifetime will be made for all.  I really cannot wait to go back. Finally I have to say on behalf of all the ISBHF family that this is amazing result for the sport.  UK Ball hockey hosting its first World Championship.  They have grown so much and now they are hosting the World.  This is a very important step and accomplishment that we hope adds to the tremendous work Ali Cree, Rob Clayton, Carl Wood and all the UK team now and past have done.  Enjoy the World is coming to you for what promises to be "a cracking" World Juniors.  It is a historical moment in Ball Hockey you have created. The ISBHF is also proud to have two new ISBHF BOD members from Asia.  Both Colin and Gabi will add a presence that will assist us in continuing to build an important framework of cooperation with these key nations.  As such our ISBHF Board member Roman Torok will be attending the prestigious Mekong Cup to continue this key networking.  And also with an eye to prepare the Asian championships in Hong Kong in November 2016.  We also had the CBHA and Canadian President Shelley Callaghan outline the Banff Masters which will house 10 Men's teams and 6 Women's in Beautiful Banff, Alberta.  This event with the beauty of the Rocky Mountains in the backdrop and its two state of the art arenas will provide a wonderful platform the for the players to enjoy.  Falling into the same sphere as Sheffield as a great venue for players sticking with the ISBHF formula for excellent events for you to enjoy.  With the co-operation of the CBHA and the proud Provincial association of Alberta Wild Rose.  These players coming from Europe, Canada and the USA and abroad will get a rousing Western Canada welcome.  I would also like to congratulate the ISBHF Male player of the year.  Stanslav Petrik of Slovakia.  I have seen Stanslav as a one time Coach competing against him always being aware of his great talents.  And like the greatest goalies in hockey.  His excellent efficiency of movement and immaculate positioning helped lead Slovakia to another World title.  He continues to be involved in the game and still get better as a player.  And we are proud to have him join the ranks of the greatest players winning this award. Two Newfoundland players from Canada won key ISBHF recognition awards.  Dawn Tulk who has scored some key important goals to assist Canada in winning Gold medals these last two events was selected as ISBHF Female player of the Year.  Dawn is a very worthy recipient who like Petrik falls now into the pantheon of players who have won these prestigious awards. Finally an award for spirit and determination.  And remembering the great Robert Muller Memorial award.  Who was a great player who represented Germany in ISBHF events as a very good forward, and Germany at IIHF events as a top goalie.  He has left us many years ago but is not forgotten.  The Muller memorial award was presented to Patrick O'Keefe of the CBHA who showed tremendous spirit and dedication to his country and team by attending the World's in Zug event even though just 2 weeks before he was ready to play on Canada.  A medical condition made him lose the opportunity which would have made most be disappointed at there hardship.  But Patty decided to attend and support his teammates.  Showing the true heart those who know him know he has.  The CBHA and Newfoundland Association should be very proud of these International awards for there players. We also discussed Heilbronn, Germany which will have the largest amount of club teams coming to play in the ISBHF World Cup Clubs in ISBHF history.  Once again using an amazing venue in which the Professional Ice Hockey team the Heilbronn Ice Hockey team uses as home.  These players and teams coming from Finland, Canada, USA, United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will provide an amazing backdrop to this beautiful arena and city.  Players coming from 9 nations, 9 different styles, will converge in what will be a true historical event for us at the ISBHF.  The deepest National involvement we have had at this World Championship. We will also hopefully have a update on the Caribbean Cup in Grand Cayman very soon.  This event was very successful in 2014 and we hope it will be again.  What a backdrop with the white sands of 7 mile beach, combined with the air conditioned ball hockey facility at Kings.  We hope this event goes off again in June of this year.Following in these amazing facilities we are working on for the players of the World.  For the players of the ISBHF family.  Like Sheffield UK, Banff, Canada, Heilbronn, Germany, Grand Cayman, and Hong Kong.  We had a presentation of the 2017 ISBHF Men`s and Women`s World Championship`s in Pardubice, Czech Republic.  This event will run from June 1 to June 11 in 2017 in two large Ice Hockey arenas in Pardubice.  This will be a major event following in the high standard of tradition of the ISBHF. More details will follow but needless to say we are all impressed with our visit to the city in 2015 for AGM, and are very excited with the many details of exposure and experiences the players and ISBHF family will enjoy in 2017.  That are Czech family introduced to us.We are all quite excited about all these events and the hard work we will do behind the scenes to make all these events wonderful experiences for the participants of the ISBHF family.  Keeping in the tradition of excellence in our 20th Year of Existence as the leader in the World in our sport.Until next time.  Have a great season and enjoy our game.George GortsosPresident, International Street & Ball Hockey Federation

ISBHF Presents Top Venue in Switzerland For Canadian High Performance Players in 2015

Delegates from around the World, which included CBHA President Shelley Callaghan were treated to a tour of the World Championship venue for the 2015 World Men's and Women's in Zug, Switzerland. It became quickly apparent that this tour was going to be spectacular.Delegates from around the World, which included CBHA President Shelley Callaghan were treated to a tour of the World Championship venue for the 2015 World Men's and Women's in Zug, Switzerland.  It became quickly apparent that this tour was going to be spectacular. Mainly from the fact that the 8000 seat arena which is home to legendary euro team EVZug, and the splendour of the city with the alps nearby pose a great backdrop for the best Men`s and Women`s players of the World to congregate. For the CBHA and its High Performance program at both the Men`s and Women`s level this is a championship that will provide them a opportunity to play the game in a great setting, in great arenas and also to experience Zug the capital city of this region of Switzerland.  The CBHA National Team programs must start preparing for what promises to be a intense event as this area of Switzerland has a ball hockey tradition with the Oberwil Rebels 7 time champion of the Swiss league which will provide a strong fan base along with the 30 National Teams coming.  To prepare the organizing committee is building a rink for the Women``s right next door to the Main rink.  In addition the B Pool will be using the practice rink of EVZug and that is also right next door to Bossard.  Each rink having its own level, with all finals ending in Brossard.  Finally the Swiss organizing committee will be building a huge tent with a stage that will have nightly music and create a festival atmosphere for Players, Coaches, Staff, Delegates and Family. If you are a top Canadian player, this event is one to strive to make the respective National Team that will be representing Canada in 2015.  Obviously the CBHA is in the process of naming GMs in a competitive process and once named they will begin to work on plans on how to find the right players.  And we all await news of these leaders. For players this makes the 2014 Nationals in Saskatchewan very important.  Not only for the CBHA from the historical context that this will be the first ever Nationals held in our member province.  But more importantly that this 2014 Nationals will be thoroughly scouted as the Women and Men National team staff watch the players do their stuff.  Simply put if you want to reach Zug, that road goes through Saskatoon for CBHA top players. One thing for sure.  The CBHA is proud to offer this link to its players through our family at the ISBHF, and we thank the Swiss Ball Hockey Association and Zug organizing team for their efforts.  For the players, coaches and staff who aspire to represent the CBHA and Canada.  The work to get to Zug for those who earn those sweaters has begun.

From the Alps to our Ball Hockey Family

The large meetings brought many worthwhile discussions. And we went over all our events. We see that our World Juniors in Bratislava will have more countries and teams than at any time in our history and the Slovaks are ready to put a great show on for our ISBHF youth.

U-20 will have 8-10 teams, and U-16, U18 will have 6-8.  This is just a great occurrence for our event and the World Juniors. We also had a presentation from Nitra, Slovakia, home of President Jozef Stumpel and World Champion Stanislav Petrik.

They came to Zug to show us that they want to have a World leading tournament for the 2014 World Cup in late August.  We have many club teams that will be attending from many nations.  And this also promises to be are largest event ever with 9-10 nations indicating they will send club teams. Finally to the warm sun, and our more experienced players.  We look to have a field of 18 Men's and Women's teams attending our Master's in the USA.  This is our biggest Masters ever, and also the first World Championship for our Women members.  Tampa Bay will be the place for our Masters festival in September 2014.  And European and North American teams are already booking in and getting ready. For even more heat in June we are working closely with our Caribbean members and look to moving close to filling that event in June in the Air-conditioned arena in Cayman Islands.  Another great event that will feature great ball hockey and sun and warm water for our ISBHF family. All these events are on the ISBHF webpage and players, parents, coaches and refs can see all the information on our ISBHF webpage.  Our ISBHF family is keen to deliver top ball hockey events to our members, along with well run and organized events.  Everything is all up on our website as our Organizers are proud to welcome players from the family to these events. Canadian women take world ball hockey gold

The hometown girls starred under the spotlight Sunday afternoon, but things didn't go quite as planned for the local boys as the 2013 World Ball Hockey Championships wrapped up Sunday afternoon in metro St. John's.

At the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay, Dawn Tulk of Deer Lake scored both of Canada's goals and Kristen Cooze of Kippens assisted on them as the host country blanked Slovakia 2-0 to win Canada's third gold medal in five years at the worlds (Slovakia won the other two).

Meanwhile, at the Glacier in Mount Pearl, the Canadian men thumped Portugal 7-3 to win the bronze - not the colour Canada had been shooting for at the worlds. A 5-1 loss to the Czech Republic in semifinal play Saturday dashed any hopes of Canada winning a sixth world championship.

Tulk and Cooze aren't the only Newfoundlanders on the triumphant women's team. They were joined by Amanda Kean of St. Anthony and assistant coach Tom Walsh of Clarenville.

Tulk, Cooze and Kean were scouted at the women's ball hockey nationals last summer in Edmonton where Newfoundland won the gold medal in the B pool. From there, they were named to Canada's roster.

"To win a gold medal in the world championship, in your home province, is very special," said the 22-year-old Tulk, who graduated from Memorial University with a physical education degree, but will return to MUN to complete an education degree. "Each of us had a huge cheering section today, which was quite something."

Canada's win avenged a loss to Slovakia at the 2011 world championship in Slovakia (Canada won in 2007 and '09).

Fourteen members from the 2011 team returned to this year's club, and Tulk said it wasn't long before the newcomers understood how badly the returnees wanted to beat the Slovaks.

"It's the whole Team Canada attitude and experience," she said. "Actually, the first couple of practices were pretty overwhelming. To put on a Team Canada jersey is amazing."

Canada went 3-0 in the round-robin, outscoring the opposition 31-0. The Canadians thumped the Swiss 15-1 and the Americans 8-0 in the playoffs.

"It's going to be a sad day Monday when the team breaks up and everyone heads in different directions," Tulk said. "A lot of us came together not knowing anybody, and now here we are a week later and we're like family.

"So we're going to enjoy this moment tonight (Sunday)."

It was a much different story at The Glacier Sunday as a disappointed Canadian men's team accepted their bronze medals.

Canada steamrolled the opposition in the round-robin, reeling off four wins and outscoring their opponents 26-5.

But their march to gold hit a roadblock Saturday night against the Czechs, who scored two goals each in the first and second periods while Canada could only manage to get on the scoreboard in the third.

"After last night's game, a debacle if you will," said veteran Canadian forward Terry Ryan of Mount Pearl, "it was really, really tough to get up for today's game.

"But we did a good job putting it in perspective, that we're playing for a medal, to go out there and get the job done. But, at the same time, we're home, it's hockey, or ball hockey, it's Canada ... it's not the gold medal."

Ryan and his teammates were particularly miffed with Saturday night's game, not only with the result but how the Czech secured the win.

"Look, I'm a big boy," Ryan said. "They beat us, we lost, and it's not sour grapes. But the way they went about it, using diving as a tactic, was unfortunate for the fans and for the sport of ball hockey.

"We prepared for the game with video and X's and O's, and they come out diving everywhere. It's very, very frustrating."

The frustration reached a boiling point with one second to go in the game when Justin Pender of St. John's, a pro hockey player in the ECHL the past four seasons, picked up a pair of five-minute match penalties.

One of the referees suffered a leg injury in the fracus, and Pender, who is likely facing suspension, did not dress in the bronze-medal game.

In Sunday's game, Chris Sparkes of St. John's had two goals, and Robert Slaney of Upper Island Cove registered three assists for Canada. Ryan had a pair of helpers. Other Newfoundlanders on the Canadian squad included Patrick O'Keefe of Mount Pearl, Jordan Escott of St. John's and Andrew Sweetland of Bonavista.

Slovakia beat the two-time defending champion Czechs 2-1 for the gold medal Sunday. Canada has won the tournament five times, the Czechs three times and the Slovaks twice.

Teams pay their dues, pay their way

You may be surprised to hear most of the 25 teams competing this week at the 2013 world ball hockey championships have paid their own way to St. John’s.“It’s the nature of our sport that if you want to compete at the world level, you are going to be paying out of your own pocket,” said International Street & Ball Hockey Federation (ISBHF) president George Gortsos.

“In these economic times, it’s unbelievable that we had so many nations able to make it here,” said Gortsos, who figures teams have to come up with between $50,000 and $60,000 to make it to Newfoundland and Labrador.“It just show you the dedication and love of the sport the ISBF family has.“It’s not easy.”

Teams representing the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Slovakia get some government funding to help offset the cost of travelling to the championships, but most don’t. Others were also able to get some funding through sponsorship.Gortsos also said there were four or five other countries who wanted to come but, for various reasons, couldn’t make it.

He said India, for example, had the funding but the players couldn’t get their visas in time. Finland and Austria couldn’t come up with the funding.

The Canadian Ball Hockey Association’s relationship with Sport Canada comes through its associate membership with Hockey Canada, which is the recognized governing national sports organization for all hockey. But Gortsos, a former Canadian player and team coach, points out ball hockey receives no funding from Sport Canada.

He said the Canadian team is chosen as the result of performances at national championships and sometimes through a selection camp, but the players have to pay their way to that camp.

In the meantime, Gortsos commended the local host committee for the work it has done. “I have to commend the Newfoundland Ball Hockey Association. They do a great job for ball hockey in this province, which has a great tradition in the sport,” said Gortsos, who isn’t surprised the tournament is going over well in the capital city and area this week.

“I mean, what other association in the history of Newfoundland has brought together 25 national teams for a world tournament involving with 700-750 players coaches?”

“All I’m getting is that the teams are blown away with how they are being treated here. It was a huge challenge to make it here, but once they got here they’ve been made very welcome. What a great job the host committee has done!”

There are eight Newfoundlanders on Canada’s long-list national men’s roster including Chris Feltham (Paradise), Patrick O’Keefe (Mount Pearl), Justin Pender (St. John’s), Mike Dyke (Gander), Terry Ryan (Mount Pearl), Andrew Sweetland (Bonavista), Robert Slaney (Upper Island Cove) and Jordan Escott (St. John’s). O’Keefe, Pender, Ryan, Sweetland, Slaney, Chris Sparkes and Escott are on the Canadian men’s team competing in these worlds.

Gortsos also pointed out how much fun there is involved within the ball hockey community during major tournaments.

Asked in an ISBHF e-magazine interview what was his most memorable game he ever played in, he picked out Canada’s win over a very strong Czech Republic in the 1996 world championship final in Bratislava, Slovakia.

“It really was incredible to win the world championship with guys who were very close and tight knit,” said Gortsos.

“And what a party we had in Bratislava. I can remember coming out of the club at 6 a.m. to catch our bus to the airport at 7 a.m.” NotesGortsos noted this province has “a proud tradition of ball hockey champions.” And he’s right about that. India Bears won the province’s first Canadian senior A ball hockey title in 1982. The St. John’s Celtics captured the national ball hockey title in 1986 and Best Western Travellers of St. John’s won back-to-back titles in 1987 and 1988... As a clarification, it’s been pointed out Bermuda has been in the world championship tournament for over a decade and has had a ball hockey league for longer. The team’s new, impressive facility is outdoors and the $300,000 cost was privately funded. The 165 foot x 80 foot lighted rink was officially opened last year. Ball hockey works to gain respect, build a higher profile

Canadian Ball Hockey Association president Shelley Callaghan admits her sport has a stigma that never seems to fade away. It’s that many people still see it as a simple game of pick-up street hockey moved indoors and have no idea of how it is played at the elite level. That ignorance may or may not have had an adverse effect on the growth of the sport or on the amount of publicity it gets from the national media. However, according to Callaghan, registration numbers in Canada have never been stronger.

“People think it isn’t as organized as say hockey,” said Callaghan. “Some local leagues lack coaching and structure and some like it that way because they say it’s more fun. But the more you get into the provincials and the nationals, you realize this is pretty heavy-duty."

“I don’t disagree that the (negative) perception is there,” said Callaghan. “But the more people who are able to get out and see the world championships, the more they see that it is a classy game and quite structured.”

And it’s growing in popularity across the country and the world. Right now, there are 40,000, but Callaghan said all of the registrations from the provinces are not it yet as this is just the start of the season. She expects close to 50,000 when the full registration is known.

“Almost half of our membership is from minor (6-19 years) ball hockey leagues,” explained Callaghan, who is from Ottawa.

“We have various age groups, like hockey,” she explained about the minor ranks. Some of the hot spots for minor ball hockey include Ontario, British Columbia and in Alberta. And, it should be noted, 14 of the 24 players listed on Canada’s national men’s team roster are from Quebec.

“Ball hockey is also growing immensely in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. And it’s starting to take off in Newfoundland and Labrador as well.”

Callaghan, who is in St. John’s for the 2013 world men’s and women’s ball hockey championships, said “A lot of people don’t know the opportunities that exist in ball hockey."

“It’s simply a fun game to play and many youngsters who pick up the game are surprised to find out they can one day wear their country’s jersey in tournaments all over the world." International Street & Ball Hockey Federation (ISBHF) president George Gortsos, who is also in St. John’s this week, admitted there are doubters who see the sport as something less than hockey or even inline hockey, but Gortsos simply says, “People should get out and see the games and decided for themselves."

“When they see how hard these athletes work and their level of fitness, I think minds will be changed,” he said.

Meanwhile, Callaghan said she’s also seen growth in the female division of the sport. “A lot of girls are amazed that they could play for Canada one day. We do a lot of scouting across Canada to find that one little diamond in the rough who could play for the national team.”

Having said that, Callaghan agreed there is little doubt the sport needs to build a higher profile across the country.

“We need to get some national sponsors to begin with,” she said. “We can’t rest on our laurels. We need to use the world championships as a springboard."

“This is a huge deal for us to be hosting this tournament in Canada. It’s like hosting a party.”

“Having all the nations here and to see all the smiling faces is a real treat. I’ve met several people from other countries at other world championships and it’s kind of like meeting some family members seeing them here.”

Some of the national teams are bolstered by Canadians. For example, Team Israel has six players from that country on the roster, with the rest coming from Canada.

Callaghan said she’s spoken with members of the Israeli team and they’ve indicated this world tournament was a great way to kick start their organization.

“They are very new, so there are a number of Israeli nationals on the team from Canada. And there are what’s called heritage players in Canada whose families are from the Israel. There is also large-scale Canadian representation on teams representing Portugal, Italy and Greece. Germany team has 11 or 12 players from that country, with the rest of the team made up of German-Canadians."

She pointed out the United Kingdom team was initially based in British Columbia, but the members of men’s and women’s teams competing this week are all from the U.K. with U.K. passports. There are 30 men’s teams competing in the United Kingdom.

The sport is in the early development stages in such places as Bermuda, where teams used to play on an outdoor parking lot, but they’ve recently built an indoor facility specifically for ball hockey. Ball hockey is already strong in countries such as Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Canada squeaks by Greece to go 2-0

Canada’s less-than-stellar performance against Greece at the 2013 World Ball Hockey Championship at the Jack Byrne Arena Monday night was termed “a wake-up call” by coach Tony Iannitto.

Canada scored with a two-man advantage late in the second period en route to a 3-2 win over Greece at the Jack Byrne Arena.

The Canadians were fortunate to get the win after a lackluster start that saw them fall behind 2-1 midway in the second frame.

St. John’s native Justin Pender,  the player of the game for the winners, tied the game at 2-2 on a shot just outside the blueline with eight minutes left in the second period.

Martin Frechette scored the winner with 23 seconds left in the second frame, with Bonavista native Andrew Sweetland earning the assist. Nelson Vargas Dias opened the scoring for Canada on a first-period power play.

Kevin Kuezmarski scored two power-play goals for Greece and was player of the game for his side.

The Canadian coach wasn’t surprised at how well Greece played.

“I just think our team wasn’t ready in the first period. We got better in the second and we played a good third period,” said Iannitto. “The guys weren’t mentally prepared at the start and must have been thinking it was going to be an easy game.”

Today, the Canadians will need to find another gear if they want to stay atop the standings as they take on Slovakia which blanked Germany 6-0 for a 2-0 record. The big match is slated for 8:15 tonight after the official tournament opening ceremonies, slated to start at 7 p.m.

“There won’t be any more easy games,” said Iannitto. “I think our guys have learned a lesson. They’ll be ready for our next game.”

Pender, who played a solid game on defence and pounded the ball from the blueline on Canada’s power plays, said he didn’t know the game was going to be so hard.

“But we came out on top and now, hopefully, we can keep going.”

Pender admitted his team struggled to find its legs in the first period.

He said he’s well aware that Slovakia is a strong team, but feels Canada will get the win if they play the way they played in the second half of Monday’s contest.

“We need to play our game. Keep it simple. We need to get the ball deep, get bodies going to the net and hopefully we can bang in a few rebounds.”

Greece lost the services of starting goaltender Fotios Moshonas midway in the second period when he slipped on the floor and went down while trying to race out of the net on a delayed penalty call against Canada. He was replaced by Ioannis Vrettis.

In an earlier game, Portugal upset the defending world champion Czech Republic 1-0 with the help a brilliant glove save by goaltender Daniel Medeiros with 28 seconds left in the game. The U.S. beat  Switzerland 7-1.

Ready to put on a floor show

Canadian team veteran Terry Ryan is encouraging all sports fans in the St. John’s area to check out the 2013 World Ball Hockey Championships, opening Sunday at Jack Byrne Arena.“Those who have never seen the game at this level will be surprised at the speed and the shooting ability of the players,” said Ryan, who has competed for Canada in five world championships.Ryan said spectators will probably be surprised at the pace of the game given that many of the teams turn over five lines.“I believe it was teams from this province in the 1980s who were the first to turn over four lines,” he said.Ryan is fortunate to get an opportunity to play for Canada this time around. There was a point this year when it looked as if he’d have to pass up the tournament due to a hockey injury. He broke two ribs and had a collapsed lung while competing for Conception Bay North CeeBee Stars in provincial senior hockey in February, but says he’s completely healed and ready for the ball hockey challenge. The 36-year-old said his goal was to be physically ready by May in terms of letting the national team know if he could play or not.“I thought I was better a month and a half ago, but I still had some problems so I started running. Now, I’m at the point where I’ve been running up Signal Hill five times a week,” he said.Ryan, who is from Mount Pearl, is one of several Newfoundlanders involved with the Canadian team, including Chris Feltham of Paradise, Patrick O’Keefe of Mount Pearl, Andrew Sweetland of Bonavista, Justin Pender of St. John’s and Robert Slaney of Upper Island Cove, as well as alternates Mike Dyke of Gander, Jordan Escott of St. John’s and team coaching staff members Ian Moores of Bay Roberts, Chris Sparkes of St. John’s and David Roper of Mount Pearl.Ryan, Slaney, Moores, Escott and Dyke were all a part of the Herder Memorial Trophy-winning CeeBees, and Ryan said it would be pretty cool to add a world ball hockey championship the same year to that accomplishment.“The Newfoundland guys are experienced hockey players and they can play ball hockey,” he said. “We have a tradition of producing very good ball hockey players in this province.”Ryan claims Sweetland is the most “dynamic” offensive ball hockey player in Canada. He expects Canada and the United States, along with the Czech Republic and Slovakia, to be the strong contenders for the crown.“There are a half-dozen teams who could win the championship, but I’ll be disappointed if we’re not in the final,” he said.“We’ve always had heart and determination, but we’ve got more scoring this time. Still, we can’t take anyone for granted.”Ryan said ball hockey very popular in Czech Republic and Slovakia and it’s part of hockey training programs from an early age.“It’s part of their culture.”There are three Newfoundlanders on the Canadian women’s roster. Kristen Cooze of Kippens, Dawn Tulk of Deer Lake and Amanda Kean of St. Anthony join assistant coach Tom Walsh of Clarenville and team doctor Jessica Wade of St. John’s.While the 18-team men’s tournament opens Sunday, the eight-team women’s event gets underway Tuesday at the Mount Pearl Glacier.Pool A of the men’s section of the tournament opens 2 p.m. Sunday at Jack Byrne, with France taking on the United States. That game is followed by Pakistan and Slovakia at 4 p.m. and Czech Republic and Switzerland at 6 p.m. Canada takes on Germany at 8 p.m.Pool B games at the Glacier include Italy against Israel at 4 p.m. followed by Great Britain and Cayman Islands at 6 p.m. and Bermuda and Hong Kong at 8 p.m.The women’s division opens 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mount Pearl Glacier. There are also games 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. with Canada taking on the Great Britain at 2:30 p.m.The championships conclude June 9.The tournament is held every two years. Czech Republic won the men’s title in 2011 and Slovakia took the women’s crown in 2011. Canada was runner-up both times.Tickets for individual games are $5. Tickets for the championship games for men’s A and B pools as well as the women’s pool are $10. Source: http://www.thetelegram.com/Sports/2013-02-21/article-3181563/Newfoundlanders-moving-up-in-the-worlds/1There will be seven Newfoundlanders wearing Canada’s colours at the 2013 world ball hockey championship on the men’s and women’s national teams, with the possibility of more earning roster spots before the drop of the ball in June.Details on this year’s International Street and Ball Hockey Federation’s (ISBHF) championships were announced during a news conference Thursday afternoon in St. John’s.The men’s and women’s championships are scheduled for metro St. John’s June 2-9, with 27 teams set to play in men’s A and B pools and the women’s division.Pat O’Keefe and five-year national team veteran Terry Ryan of Mount Pearl, Justin Pender of St. John’s and Andrew Sweetland of Bonavista will suit up for the men’s team, while Kristen Cooze of Kippens, Dawn Tulk of Deer Lake and Amanda Kean of St. Anthony will play for Canada’s women’s team. The three female players were part of the Newfoundland entry which won the B gold medal at the 2012 national championship in Edmonton.Ian Moores of Bay Roberts, who will be behind Canada’s bench for the fifth time (three times with the national junior team, and twice with the senior squad), will be an assistant coach on the men’s side for head coach and GM Tony Iannitto.“There’s definitely a possibility there could be more guys named to the team,” said Moores.Currently, only 11 players from a 25-man roster have been appointed.“I think Adam Pardy’s job is there if he wants it,” Moores said of the Bonavista defenceman, who is currently playing for the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans. “And depending on what happens with his junior team, and whether there is a pro opportunity after his year is through, Zach O’Brien (of St. John’s) is in the mix.”O’Brien is the top scorer on the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan.“Chris Sparkes (who played in the 2011 national team) and Jordan Escott of St. John’s are right there, too.”In addition to Moores on the men’s team staff, Dave Roper of Mount Pearl is the national team’s trainer. On the women’s team, Tom Walsh of Clarenville will assist head coach Christine Pellerin. Dr. Jessica Wade of St. John’s is on the team’s medical staff. With each team carrying upwards of 25 players, not counting staff and supporters, tournament chairman Paul Barron of St. John’s said there could be as many as 1,000 players, coaches, officials, staff and fans in St. John’s for the event. That means 400 hotel rooms in the city and an influx of over $3 million for the local economy, according to Destination St. John’s.Barron said a final 80-plus game schedule has not yet been drawn up, but rinks booked for the championships are Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay and the Mount Pearl Glacier. There is still a chance Mile One Centre could be used for some of the championships, namely the playoff round, but floor time cannot yet be booked at the downtown facility because of the possibility of dates conflicting with the St. John’s IceCaps if the team reaches the American Hockey League’s post season.

FORMER NHL PLAYER, JOZEF STUMPEL, NEW PRESIDENT OF THE SLOVAK BALL HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

FORMER NHL PLAYER, JOZEF STUMPEL, NEW PRESIDENT OF THE SLOVAK BALL HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

Jozef Stumpel, former NHL player, was recently elected president of the Slovak Ball Hockey Association (SHBU).

In the past, Stumpel distinguished himself on the international scene with both the ice hockey and ball hockey national Slovak teams. In 1999, he won the International Street & Ball Hockey Federation World Championship (ISBHF) World Championship, in Zvolen and in 2002, the Ice Hockey World Championship in Gothenburg (Sweden).

During his professional ice hockey career, Stumpel played 1002 games in the NHL with the jerseys of Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers and Los Angeles Kings where he reached 707 points: 201 goals and 506 assists.

Today, at the age of 40, he is still an active hockey player, playing in the highest Slovak ice hockey league where he won the silver medal for his hometown, Nitra, in 2012.

When Jozef Stumpel accepted his candidacy for SHBU President, he also accepted to be the honorary president of the “Streethockey School League”, organized for primary and secondary school in his country.

As the Czech Street and Ball Hockey Association did not too long ago, members of the SHBU Council confirmed their membership in the only international ball hockey organization covering nations and federations from all over the world, the International Street and Ball Hockey Federation (ISBHF).

During the last SHBU Council meeting, it has been announced that Slovak national men’s and women’s teams will participate in the ISBHF World Ball Hockey Championships, from June 2-9, 2013, in St. John’s Canada.

Canada brings back bronze from the Master's World Cup

The Master's World Cup organized by the ISBHF took place in Pilsen Czech Republic, from September 19 to 23. The tournament welcomed eight teams of players 40 and over.Slovakia won the gold medal, Czech Republic the silver one, and Canada the bronze. The province of Quebec was represented by three players: Martin Boucher, Patric Gendron, and Paolo Musto.SUMMARY OF THE BRONZE MEDAL FINALCanada 3 – Slovakia Old Boys 1The match had a great pace since the beginning. Ricci’s hard slap shot from the blueline was tapped in by Dennis Bettencourt and the Canadians took the lead. The game was very equal, but then Hránek obtained a bad penalty for body-checking and Musto quickly found the way to increase the gap between both teams as he made it 2:0. The second period didn’t offer much action as both teams were fighting for each ball. Hránek got a penalty for elbowing in the beginning, but the Canadians didn’t add another one. The powerplay was offered also to the Old Boys in the end, but they didn’t take advantage of it neither. The final period started with a Slovakian pressure, as they felt their last chance and Ronald Kochan managed to decrease the score. The Canadians had some chances as well, but as the end was approaching, the game moved into their zone. They resisted the pressure and Paolo Musto scored the match-decider into the empty net 8 seconds before the horn and secured a win for team Canada.

Paolo Musto (captain of team Canada): „It was hard for both teams as we lost our semifinals, but lots of guys were new at the team and still wanted a medal. The Slovaks pressured us a couple of minutes in the last period, but they didn’t have any really good chances, so we were also a bit lucky with that. We were capitalising on our opportunities, but it was still a hardly-won game.“

Aladár Melíšek (captain of team Old Boys Slovakia): „It was for sure our best match here. We put our hearts in the game and I think we did a great job representing the Old Boys. The key moment was probably in the third, where we got angry at the referees as they didn’t give the icing, but it’s just the game and fun. We have our minds and we can take it.“

ISBHF Elects Its Third President

This past weekend in Paris at the ISBHF AGM meetings Mr. George Gortsos from Ontario was voted as the new President of the International Street and Ball Hockey Federation. The vote was unanimous and had the full support of the International membership.

Tony Iannitto from Quebec was also unanimously voted in as VP of the ISBHF Board member who will be in charge of Marketing.  This veteran of the ISBHF since its inception will add to the team approach being brought forward with his experience and will carry Canada's vote in board meetings.

Both will now serve the ISBHF and all its members for the next two years.Mr. Gortsos presented a mandate that included a more communicative approach, a much safer game , and a continued growth at our youth levels. Finally a more collaborative team approach of running the World association.  These mantra's were created in synergy and in discussion with the new CBHA Board and brought with Mr.Gortsos across the Ocean to our World partners. Of note is the fact that all four of the main board's of our sport being Switzerland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic all totally supported and were agreement with every point presented.  This above anything else signals a willgness to tackle the challenges that lay ahead to make the game grow as a International family. The CBHA is proud now to have provided the ISBHF its third President. The CBHA wishes George Gortsos all the best in his new endeavour.
