Thursday September 17 Round 1 playoffs

Key plays enable Horsemen to get past Brewers

The Horsemen took their hopeful first step towards the next round by edging out the Brewers in two very close games. It was again their captain taking charge and in a very big way. V.Pandza was an absolute force, scoring three out of the Horsemen’s four goals while setting up M.Kardum early in the second period. The first game did however need a shootout to decide matters. In their last attempt, D.Greco came through on a hard low wrist shot to beat G.Platanitis. The Brewers may have felt a slight let down but that didn’t effect a team with that much experience. As expected, the second game was just as close with so much on the line. The Brewers had a great start and were able to carry a 4-3 lead early in the final frame .And while everything appeared to look promising, a pair of quick plays altered their path into forcing a game three. The Horsemen took advantage of a power play opportunity with S.DosSantos evening the score. Then, only two minutes later, the pendulum swung and who other than V.Pandza to break the tie and send the Brewers packing.  This series was expected to be this close. Both games could have gone either way leaving only some ball luck and key plays to make the difference. Tonight, the Horsemen found a way to get it done and will now face another difficult challenge versus the division leaders Buckshot’s.

Family held their own for as long as they could vs Assadi Consulting Inc

It took some time but the Assadi Consulting Inc played to their identify. They favour a more free flowing form of hockey in which open space is created and the ball moves quickly into the attacking zone. The Family did make it very difficult by committing to a disciplined man on man game. Both contests took plenty of time for the Assadi Consulting Inc to find their strive. However, once they did, the pace became slightly overwhelming for the Family. There best moments only came in the second periods of both games where they combined for six goals. Y.Gazura netted a pair to solidify a 4-1 win and N.Gilbert made a few brilliant plays in the ensuing match to close out the series. M.Freda took a different role playing in net for the Family, and did not disappoint. If not for him early on, this series would have ended in a landslide.

(4)Assadi Consulting Inc vs The Family(1) Game 1

(1)The Family vs Assadi Consulting Inc(5) Game 2

The SalumiVino player of the night goes to Vinko Pandza of the Horsemen. Looks like the Horsemen’s captain has plenty left over in the tank. As the weeks pass, V.Pandza seems to be getting better and what better time than playoff hockey. His club will now move to the semi finals thanks to his four goals and two assists.

The Thursday 4vs4 division is now down to four teams. The semi final match ups are as follows:

(1)Buckshots vs Horsemen(4) Key factors for the Horsemen will require goaltending and a committed man on man game. If C.Stavriadis performs the way he can in net coupled with everyone buying into a hard effort, than the Buckshot’s will have their hands full. If not, look for the Buckshot’s offense to take care of business

(2)Fatal Demons vs Assadi Consulting Inc(3) It’s a series that will rely on who wants it more. Since both sides occupy every aspect of the game, the will to battle and do all the little necessary things will come into play. Look for this one to be a dandy of a series.

 Division 1  Semi final

K.Kavan scores shootout winner, Punishers force game 3 to knock out Orient

K.Kavan scored in the sixth shootout attempt of game 2, and the Punishers were able to force a third and deciding game that eventually ended the Orients season. Despite dropping the opening contest, the Punishers remained positive and knew that they weren't done yet. They had a chance to regulate matters in regulation time when P.Karvouriaris buried his second with just over a minute remaining. However, it took only moments later for the very same P.Karvouriaris to take an untimely penalty. There was no doubt the Orient smelled blood and evened the score almost immediately courtesy of B.Cabral's power play goal. That late tally certainly set the stage for a coin toss situation for both teams. Unfortunately for the Orient, six of their breakaway attempts failed to penetrate M.Melo. The Punishers  knew then that the door was open for a clearer path. And who better than your main pieces to get it done. C.Gingras struck first, the Punishers tightened up and M.Melo took care of the rest en route to a 2-0 victory. The Orient will look back at many moments where they could have gotten it done, and will now have to deal with the anguish knowing that they could have easily been playing in next weeks final.

 (4)Punishers vs Orient(3) S.O Game 2

 (0)Orient vs Punishers(2) Game 3

The SalumiVino player of the night goes to M.Melo of the Punishers. After stopping six shootout attempts to force a big game three, M.Melo delivered in an even bigger way by shutting the door completely to help send the Punishers to the final.

This semi final victory for the Punishers will have them face off versus the Bad Guys Inc in next weeks final. That final will depend on how the Bad Guys Inc apply their game plan. By now, they know who the treats are. And even though they'll identify them, its easier said than done to try and stop them.

Division 2 Semi final

Classics progress after slow start to Excalibur

As good of a start the Excalibur could have hoped for and got, this series started to slowly slip away as the games went on. The Classics eventually tilted the court in their favour in game two where they squeezed out a very close win thanks to a pair of goals by A.Zarzour. Still, everything was up for grabs and both sides knew anything could happen in only twelve minutes. But the Classics felt they had momentum swing their way after securing game two even though J.Azoulay got the Excalibur on board early on. The Classics is a balanced team that has impact players all over the line-up, great depth, and loads of experience to handle adversity. Eventually, it all paid off when G.DeMarinnis evened the score right before A.Henein tapped in a late rebound to seal the series.

Solid goaltending give Nature Boys and Degenerates every opportunity to take series

For how close this series was, at one point it just came down to who was going to be that late hero. Both sides traded wins in games that could have easily gone either way. With the series all tied up, game three was just a continuation of the previous matches as both sides kept it extremely close. So close that time was winding down to a dreaded shootout. That was up until D.Greco sent S.Marricco on a clear breakaway. And despite having your best goal scorer alone in front of a goaltender, P.Delli Colli was simply to good on this night to be beaten. However, some ball luck fell in the Degenerates favour and S.Marricco was able to grab is own rebound in order to feed the back of the net. That crushing marker left all but 20 seconds on the clock. There was no doubt that both netminders were stellar enabling their clubs to take the series. J.Atch was focused and steady throughout the entire three games for the Degenerates, as was P.Delli Colli for the Nature Boys leaving only one single play to make the entire difference.

(2)Degenerates vs Nature Boys(4) Game 1

 (2)Degenerates vs Nature Boys(1) Game 3

The SalumiVino player of the night goes to Sandro Marricco of the Degenerates. Despite having his fair share of missed chances, the natural sniper still found a way to riffle four big goals.

The second division is now down to only two teams. The Classics and the Degenerates just came off an emotional series decided at the very end. It will go without saying that goaltending will play the biggest role. Both sides will generate shots and chances even though they defend well. Look for an intense battle with lots of pride and bragging rights on the line.

Late blunder cost Degenerates in  loss to Nature Boys

After a very convincing win, the Degenerates couldn’t sustain a strong start in the second game. They pounced to a 3-0 lead and seemed destined for another lopsided affair until the Nature Boys finally cracked the barrier. Once A.Pittarelli got them on board, the snow ball effect was in motion. The Degenerates played into the Nature Boys hands committing enough turnovers and mental mistakes to lose a game that should have at least gone into a shootout. The last goal was an absolute blunder, one that J.Atch knew he should have had. A.Pittarelli took the chance by sending the ball towards the net, and in doing so, was able to sneak one by the net minder to complete his hat trick. Luckily enough for the Degenerates, the game didn’t have any meaning as both sides were already destined to meet up in the first round of the playoffs.

Prolific Athletes power past slumping Classics

It may be a very small sample size, but the Classics may feel like they are slumping as of late. A first place team never wants to finish off the way they did. The Classics pride themselves on playing structured sound defensive hockey but tonight they looked like a bunch of pee wees going up against a superior opponent. The Prolific Athletes simply had their way, combining for 13 goals in both games. Many players led the charge up front with N.Gilbert and Y.Gazura sharing four goals each. Even though the results went sour on this particular night, the Classics wont be too worried as they enter the playoffs. There is just to much experience to go around for a group of guys who believe in one another, and in the system they play.

S.Ruggiero haunts the Orient, fail to secure spot to the final

All they needed was that last win of the season. The Orient just came off a convincing 7-2 win versus the Excalibur and needed that second result in order to secure a straight pass to the final. Instead, they arguably let one single player beat them. S.Ruggiero single handily destroyed the confidence of a club that thought they had it wrapped up in the bag. And why not when you factor going up against team that was in last place of the second division. Every indictor pointed to a sure victory. That was until S.Ruggiero came to haunt the Orient. You have to ask how one player can sometimes do it on his own. However, when you have a nose for the net like Ruggiero does, these anomalies sometimes happen. The sniper was absolutely incredible riffling six out of the Excalibur’s eight goals. Four of his tallies came just shy of the eleven minute mark of the first period. And while the Orient will be hung over for a while after this defeat, the Excalibur will be riding a high as they managed to secure a playoff spot due to this victory.

(7)Orient vs Excalibur(2)

(8)Excalibur vs Orient(4)

The SalumiVino player of the night goes to Steve Ruggiero of the Excalibur. He came through and he did it at the right time of the season. Its always nice to have an established goal scorer produce in time of need. His six goals ultimately clinched a playoff spot for the Excalibur.

Tonight concluded the regular season of both divisions in the 4vs4 Monday’s. The top division will have the Orient go up against the Punishers while the Bad Guys Inc will patiently wait in the final. This series will come down to how well the Orient will contain three major threats- from the Punishers. If they play them smart, and get the timely saves-from there net minder, a spot in the final is within reasonable reach. But that is always easier said than done. The Punishers are lethal up front and will more likely produce in a big way.

The second division will have 4 teams challenge in the semi finals. The match ups are as follows:

(1)The Classics vs Excalibur(4) If the way you finish the regular season is any indication of what’s to come, than the Excalibur are feeling pretty good about themselves unlike the Classics that seem to lost their groove lately. But despite all that, both sides will do what is necessary once that ball drops.  Both teams have experience and a couple of players on each side that can hurt you offensively. Look to smart play, discipline and the goaltending to play big roles.

(2)Degenerates vs Nature Boys(3) They just finished playing each other and they both know that they can trade plenty of chances up front. These teams need to tighten up, and get required goaltending. Limiting mistakes while being opportunist will come into play. It could come down to the wire.

(4)GK vs Capitals(2)

GK surge early in third period to top Capitals

Despite giving up the opening and closing goal of the game, the rest in between belonged to the GK. The Capitals managed to hang in there long enough but eventually realised it was done when M.David and F.Belisle each struck early in the third period for a 4-1 lead. It was clear that the up hill battle from that point on felt unrealistic for the Capitals having to go up against a team can shut anybody down. In his season debut, P-O Girouard did not disappoint forming his brick wall structure stopping close to 20 shots. The win saw four different players cash in with M.David’s third period marker holding up for the winner.

(2)Montreal As vs Black Knights(5)

Y.Derohannessian’s late shorty seals the deal for the Black Knights

Y.Derohannessian couldn’t have picked a better time than to notch a shorthanded goal. Although the Black Knights were in front 3-2, that tally pretty much summed up the game between the two sides with just over three minutes remaining. It was an overall solid performance from the two teams with each side carrying the play. M.Ianovale struck first to get the balling rolling for the Montreal As and didn’t give up their first tally till the four minute mark of the second period. Once the game was tied, J.Gagne took over bagging two in a row to put the Black Knights in the drivers seat. A.Lemay did eventually respond to reduce the gap but it was all for nothing as Derohannessian struck shortly after with a huge blow.

The SalumiVino player of the night goes to Jonathan Gagne of the Black Knights. Big time players know when to show up when the game is on the line. J.Gagne was proof of that once again for the Black Knights collecting back to back tallies after snapping a dead lock 1-1 tie.
