EDMONTON , ALBERTA- It came as no surprise to see both these clubs battle it out for the ultimate prize after dominating the round robin stages. While NFLD Black Horse were trying to claim a second national championship in only two years, the Montreal Red Lite wanted to end their five year drought with a win on Saturday afternoon. As always an important start to any game is vital. Sean Legris did just that for the Red Lite with a goal just under two minutes in at 18:09.Ironically Mike Stinziani of Black Horse earlier had the first chance of the game as he flew by defenseman Carl Ghilarducci ,only to have him lose the ball as he was cutting to the net .Nicolas Guertin later added to that lead at the 3:34 minute mark of the opening period to put his club up 2-0 with one period remaining.
It may have come as a tall order at this point for the trailing team but one period was still plenty of time for Black Horse to get back into the game. Unfortunately for them Jonathan Daoust was able to take advantage with a power play goal to widen the lead to 3-0. Black Horse did eventually solve netminder Samuel Beauchamp who had been perfect throughout the entire game on a power play goal by Jeremy Bishop. Once again Jonathan Daoust responded shortly after, which really crushed any hopes for a Black Horse comeback. With time winding down Chris Sparkes did reduce the margin in half for the Black Horse before Nelson Vargas-Dias capped it off for the Red Lite on a feed by Jonathan Daoust who had a remarkable performance with four points that included two goals and 2 assists.
Note:This was the 35 anniversary of the Men’s National Championship .Ironically it was in 1995 when Quebec first participated in a National Championship of which was held in Edmonton 17 years ago and the Montreal Storm captured the gold medal. Since joining the CBHA, Quebec has won 10 Gold Medals (8-Red Lite,1-Montreal Storm,1-Black Knights)4 Silver Medals (4-Black Knights), and 3 Bronze Medals (3-Black Knights) for a total of 17 medals.
Congratulations to Red Lite 2012 National Champions
