St. Anthony’s Kean scores twice as host team improves to 3-0 without having given up a goal
Amanda Kean of St. Anthony scored twice as Canada continued its dominance in women’s play at the 2013 world ball hockey championships Thursday at the Glacier with an 8-0 victory over Greece.
Dawn Tulk of Deer Lake, Chelsea Purcell, Alicia Blomberg, Candace Moxley, Chantal Larocque and Fannie Desforges also scored for Canada, which improved to 3-0 in the tourney.
Canada, which plays Switzerland 8 p.m. today in quarter-final play at the Glacier, has outscored its opposition 31-0.
The women’s playoffs continue Saturday with the semifinals at the Glacier, with the championship game set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Jack Byrne Arena.
In other games Thursday, the United States edged Switzerland 2-1; Czech Republic shut out Great Britain 6-0 and Slovakia blanked Italy 4-0.
In men’s A Pool play at Jack Byrne Arena, Portugal defeated the U.S. 5-3; Switzerland blanked France 15-0; Germany defeated Pakistan 7-4 and Slovakia edged Greece 2-1.
In men’s B Pool competition, Bermuda blanked Great Britain 4-0; Italy and Cayman Islands played to a 3-3 draw and Hong Kong doubled Armenia 4-2.
There are four men’s quarter-final games slated today, starting at 1:45 p.m.
First-place Canada (4-0) will play in the semifinal 8:15 p.m. Saturday against an opponent yet to be decided. The championship game is 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
In the meantime, host committee member Steve Power said attendance has been very good, especially for games involving Canada at Jack Byrne Arena.
He said it started out at around 500 spectators and now Canada is drawing big crowds.
“The word is getting around about the calibre of ball hockey here this week,” said Power.
“I think the increase in attendance is a result of word of mouth.”
Power expects a full house in Saturday’s semifinal at Jack Byrne Arena.
“And if Canada makes it to the final in the men’s and women’s divisions, there’s no question those games will be sold out,” he added.
